Outdoor Games: Fun for the Whole Family

Anymore, there are fewer and fewer families that play games together. It seems like life is too busy for that. Usually when games are played they are video games. Some families still have game nights where they play board games or card games. What about playing outdoor games? Backyard games used to be a staple of society. Generally this was true for birthday parties and family reunions, but it was also important for get-togethers like barbecues and other backyard parties. You could bring back this tradition with your family and help younger and older members bond and make some memories. Making sure that everyone can play is important, so you have to decide what kinds of games you are going to play if you decide to do this. One of the best Games To Play is the Cornhole game. There are people who call it the bean bag toss or the bean bag game but whatever you choose to call it, the Cornhole game is enjoyable for everyone.

Unlike Frisbee or badminton that sometimes require some strenuous physical exertion, and unlike horseshoes which can be too heavy for a young child or an elderly or ill person to throw, the Cornhole bags are very soft and lightweight and the game is not difficult. Bags made of soft cloth and filled with either dried beans, dried corn, or plastic pellets are tossed toward a hole in a board. The object of the game is to get the bags through the hole. The game got its name because the bags were originally filled with dried corn. Now the filling has sometimes changed but the goal of the game and the ease of playing it has not. Part of the reason that so many people like the game is because it is so easy to play. The rules are so very simple that almost anyone can understand them. Very young children are able to play the game. Elderly grandparents and other relatives can play. People who are handicapped or disabled can often also play. Because there are so many individuals who are able to play the game, it is one of the best choices for family fun.

Families can be brought much closer by games like the Cornhole game. This is important for a lot of people today because of the fast pace of life. People appear to be more interested in staying near their families as they get older. The way that society is today, however, seems to be somewhat prohibitive of that. While not everyone is interested in staying close to their families some of them are just spread out in the country and the world. The people who are interested in remaining close are sometimes not able to do that because of economic constraints and other issues. Through making some extra effort people who are committed to staying close to each other are able to do so. Committing themselves to their families is not always easy because it takes time and effort, but playing the Cornhole game at family gatherings is a simple and easy way to help keep this commitment alive and well.

Games Elderly Questions

Need games for 70yr old party?

Need games that elderly people can play, preferably just sitting around a table. Obviously can’t involve a lot of sweets or movement!
Thanks

-Have them all bring a picture of themselves as a baby or younger child, if they have one and see who can guess the most right matches. Or have them bring pictures of their grandchildren – since they may already have seen some of the kids, you could have a “guess how old each one is in the picture”.
-Contest: Who has the most children or grandchildren.
-Contest: Who has the oldest children or grandchildren, as well as the youngest grandchild, as long as they are not offended that this would probably be of the oldest woman, there.
-Spoons, a fun game
-Pick an object and have them draw it on a paper plate, on top of their head or underneath the table without looking.
-Give them a small piece of playdough and have a contest of making: a sea creature, an animal, etc.
-Euchre, pinnocle, or rummy – Rummy is fun and easier to play.
-Off limits game: Each person begins with a certain number of clips, clothes pins, etc. At the beginning of the party, have a word that everyone cannot say, or a specific thing they can’t do such as scratching their head, crossing their legs, etc. If a guest is caught doing or saying the off limits thing, they get to take a clip or clothes pin from the person caught. The one with the most clips wins.
-Famous person game: Each person will have a name pinned to their back upon arrival. It could be an actor or actress from the era that they would mainly be familiar with; or a famous polician, etc. The people need to try to guess the name on their backs by asking yes or no questions, during the party. Whoever guesses their own tag, first, will win.
-Words out of words: Pick a word to make other words by combining the letters. Ask the players to make as many words using only the letters in the word. Most words wins.
-Price is right: Put some common items on a tray or table. Let each guest guess the price of each item. The guest who either has the closest grand total, or the guest who has the most “closest item totals” wins.
-Mad Gab: This is a game you can buy at the store and is really fun. It consists of reading words that are spelled in a peculiar “phonetic” way and you need to guess the actual phrase. This game really brings the “funny” out of people.
-Sherades: Well, you know how that works.
-Pictionary: Another game you can buy, involving drawing.
-For the ladies – the Purse Game: Have everyone put their purses in their laps. Name items that might be in a purse and the first one to locate that item gets a prize or points. Have the items get more unusual as the game progresses.
-What’s in the Bag: Pick out a few common household items. Put one inside a cloth bag, at a time and pass the bag around to each guest. Allow them to put their hand inside the bag for about 10 or 15 seconds or whatever time you decide is appropriate. Each guest will write down what they think the item is on their own paper. Make sure no one says the names out loud. The person who guesses the most items wins.
-Alphabet sentence finishing: Each person begins a sentence and finishes with the next letter of the alphabet. IE: My name is Gertrude and I am amiable. My name is Betty and I am beautiful. My name is Abby and I am clever, etc. Come up with other types of sentences. Whoever cannot think of a word is out of the game.
-Dressed up game: Have someone dress in a funny outfit when the game is going to begin (something easy to put on and off). This could include a funny skirt, headband, earrings, necklace, glasses, etc. Don’t tell anyone what the idea of the game is. Just have the person walk around, do something funny, etc. Then have the person leave the room. Now each guest must write down everything they can remember that person was wearing (they did not know the them beforehand – just look at the person). Whoever names the most correct things, wins.

Virtual Villagers 2 for iPod Touch?

Okay, I bought the game and my ‘village’ seems to be thriving. Though, I have only one female and about five males. I cannot get the female to have a baby, and I need her to before my villagers die! She`s 53 and not considered elderly yet. I think she had two children already, maybe only one. Can those facts affect her ability to conceive?

No, it shouldn’t. Just keep trying, it will happen eventually.
