There is barely a year Zack had his first dinner Christmas Eve with us and some of our friends here in Luna Pier. An hour before he called to ask: "Do I need to wear a costume? I've never been one of those things! "This past Christmas when we gave him a Hanukkah card He performed the ceremony of candle appropriate with us … and then promptly helped us finish decorating our Christmas tree. And this-coming Easter Sunday after anchoring 13abc morning news in Toledo (he is not afraid to work on Christian holidays), Zack will join us with Mary's sister for Easter dinner.
Last week when this here German Lutheran was locked up in a Catholic hospital, Mary found the book Jewish cooking in the gift shop of the hospital and bought me a copy. I already love this book! There are some amazing recipes here and although no pictures of completed dishes, it is not difficult to visuallize how they look. (As you can see from the pictures, cherry chile chicken was beautiful, even if it was in preparation.) But what is even more captivating book is the entire "family" aspect of writing in general. The tree is built, pictures that tell a family member is related to whom and how it happens (ie, Fanny Vitner is Silvia Robbin's mother's), and a written history dating back over 100 years.
Yesterday evening Mary made Hilda Robbins' Cherry Chili Chicken from the Jewish kitchen. Zack joined us to try this dish after the evening news, but before leaving to play in a 13abc All-Stars basketball game cons Whiteford, Mich. High School (The All-Stars have lost 80 to 75, but the school uses the players championship state!). When I handed him the dish of photo at the beginning of this post, he said: "I can not eat well before a match … I'm going to vomit!" But the dish is so good that he could not refrain from eating everything and take over with him. Calling after the game he said he felt no nausea at all, but rather the impression he had the energy of a 12-year-old, scoring 15 points.
This recipe makes a lot of food. The book says it serves 8 but look more closely. There are two pools of 3 to 4 pounds each, each cut into eight pieces (Mary had to spread it between two sheets of wire mesh). Depending on what you could be of service to accomplish this and the appetite of your family for 10 to 12 people is not unreasonable.
Some changes were to use golden raisins vs. dark raisins, granulated garlic instead of powder, and a Chardonnay for white wine. We have also served on a bed white rice and butter. Ready Chicken Dry Please visit www.indomunch.com for additional details.
